Japan Supports Health Care in West Nile
Today, the Embassy of Japan is to hand over, a project of 67,717 USD for construction of a medical theatre at Goli Health Centre III.
H.E. Kazuo Minagawa, the Ambassador of Japan to Uganda, will officiate the commissioning of the project.
Nebbi District, with a population of about 430,000, is situated in West Nile region in North-western Uganda bordering with Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In 1970s, infrastructure in the region was developed because the then President Idi Amin was from the region. However, as the regime collapsed, many of the infrastructures were destroyed and the people had to flee to neighboring countries. Today, most of the people have returned to their villages. However, social infrastructures including medical and health services remain to be rehabilitated. Goli Health Centre is not the exception; it being unable to deal with such urgent medical operations as caesarean deliveries as its facilities are only for minor surgery without blood transfusion. Patients in need of urgent operation therefore have to be referred to the regional referral hospital in Nebbi town or neighboring Gulu town which are not easily accessible. Through this project, a medical theatre has been constructed to improve the medical services for over 12,000 patients per year in the area.
The donation by Japan is part of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), a scheme administered by the Japanese Embassy to support community development projects to uplift the life of grassroots people. So far, a total of 166 projects have been funded under the scheme since its initiation in Uganda in 1992.
Japan, steadily promoting ownership of and partnership with African countries through Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) process, is committed to boosting economic growth, achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and consolidating peace and good governance in Africa.
